The route

From Fromentine, ride along the forest cycle path to reach the bridge to Noirmoutier. Crossing the bridge, there’s a cycle lane to follow. Arriving at the island, take the first exit at the roundabout, the Rondpoint de la Fosse. The cycle path then leads you along a greenway to the Polder Sébastopol. Arriving at the Port du Bonhomme, turn left towards the Rondpoint du Bonhomme. Take care crossing the roads here, aiming for the cycle path across the way. The cycle route then runs alongside the road to the Rondpoint de l’Europe. Follow the direction of Noirmoutier, with several intersections with roads to cross (in particular the D948 and D95).

• La Barre de Monts - Fromentine :
  • L’Esplanade de la Mer : habillée d'une vingtaine de villas balnéaires à l'architecture remarquable, elle offre un superbe panorama sur le pont et l'île de Noirmoutier.
  • Le feu de Fromentine : d'une hauteur de 10,05 mètres, l'édifice a la particularité d'être en métal. Il est l'unique phare de ce type en Vendée. Installé à Fromentine en 1915, il fut classé Monument Historique en 2012.
  • Le pont de l'Ile de Noirmoutier : une visibilité sur l'Ile de Noirmoutier, avec à l’ouest, la plage de la Grande Côte en arc de cercle et, à l'est le passage du Gois qu'on peut distinguer à marée basse.
  • Le passage du Gois : une route submersible de 4,2 km qui relie l'île de Noirmoutier au continent. Invisible la moitié du temps, ce fragile trait d'union est aussi un formidable lieu de vie, qu'il soit sous l'océan ou émergeant des flots.
  • Le Polder de Sebastopol : une réserve naturelle régionale, paradis de la faune, de la flore et des amoureux de la nature. Long de 4 km, large de 600 mètres et d'une superficie de 132 hectares, il est situé à l'entrée de l'île de Noirmoutier, à Barbâtre. 
  • Le port du Bonhomme : une poignée de cabanes ostréicoles, dont certaines devenues des points de vente et de dégustation, une cale d’accès à la mer, le passage de la piste cyclable qui borde la digue.
  • Les marais salants : ces paysages typiques de l'île de Noirmoutier, recouvrent un tiers de l'île. Ils ont été façonnés par l'homme au fil des siècles. La centaine de sauniers présents sur l'île y perpétuent un savoir faire ancestral et de qualité.

  • Le centre ville de Noirmoutier recèle des ruelles, des bâtisses et des lieux emprunts d'histoire. Les commerces, les terrasses de café et de restaurants créent une ambiance animée.

• La Barre-de-Monts - Fromentine:
  • Esplanade de la Mer: boasting a couple of dozen seaside villas built in extravagant style, this seafront offers splendid views to Noirmoutier Island and the bridge across to it.
  • Fromentine feu, or little lighthouse: 10.05m in height, this edifice has the distinction of having been built out of metal, making it the only one of its type in Vendée. Installed here in 1915, it was declared a listed historic monument in 2012.
  • Bridge to Noirmoutier Island: giving great views over the Ile de Noirmoutier, with, to the west, a great curving beach, the Plage de la Grande Côte, and, to the east, the Passage du Gois, the submersible road to the island, which can only be made out at low tide.
  • The Passage du Gois: a submersible, 4.2km-long road linking Noirmoutier Island to the mainland. Not visible much of the time, this fragile link to the continent turns out to be packed with life, both underwater, and along the tidal line.
  • Polder de Sebastopol: a regional nature reserve, a paradise for flora and fauna… and those who love nature. Measuring 4km in length and 600m in width, it covers a total area of 132 hectares, and is located close to the point at which you arrive on the Ile de Noirmoutier, at Barbâtre. 
  • Port du Bonhomme: with a handful of oyster-farmers’ huts, some turned into stalls offering oyster tastings and sales, and with a quay leading down to the sea, plus room for a cycle path running alongside the sea wall.
  • Marais salants: these salt marshes typify the Île de Noirmoutier, covering a third of the island and developed by salt farmers down the centuries. Still today, some 100 salt workers make a living here, carrying on ancestral ways to produce a high-quality culinary ingredient. 
• Noirmoutier-en-l'Ile: the island’s main settlement, declared a Petite Cité de Caractère for its historic and cultural heritage 
  • Noirmoutier’s town centre has quaint streets and lanes, plus buildings and sites packed with history, while the shops and restaurant and café terraces create a lively atmosphere.
