Fontenay-le-Comte / Vouvant Vendée Vélo Tour

The route

From Fontenay-le-Comte to Pissote, the cycle route follows the Transfontenaysienne cycle route, leading you alongside the Vendée River, allowing you to see the historic centre of Fontenay-le-Comte town while enjoying stretches of greenway. Along this portion of the route, follow the signposting for Vendée Vélo and La Transfontenaysienne. Next, it’s on towards Vouvant, following the signposting for Vendée Vélo. The route alternates between greenways and quiet little roads.

  • Château de Terre-Neuve : l’un des plus beaux châteaux de Vendée, possédant une superbe collection d’œuvre d’art et mobilier d’époque. Ce splendide ouvrage du XVIe siècle est renommé pour avoir abrité certains personnages illustres tels que Nicolas Rapin, Octave de Rochebrune, Georges Simenon…
  • Parc Baron : ce parc arboré est situé sur les vestiges du château médiéval dont on aperçoit encore quelques tours et une partie des remparts. Sur la partie haute du parc, le parcabout, ensemble de filets géants dans les arbres, accueille petits et grands.  
  • La Fontaine des Quatre Tias : c'est l’emblème de la ville. Surmontée d’un fronton triangulaire et d’un arc en anse de panier, l’eau s’écoule par quatre tuyaux, caractéristique insolite qui a donné son nom au bassin.
  • Église Notre Dame de Fontenay-le-Comte : C'est l'édifice religieux majeur de Fontenay-le-Comte. D'architecture gothique, cette église abrite de nombreux mobiliers et notamment l'Orgue Marie Reine du ciel, instrument remarquable.
• Massif Forestier de Mervent Vouvant : c'est la plus importante forêt domaniale de Vendée. Elle regorge de multiples petits trésors : la grotte du Père de Montfort, le pont du déluge haut de 22 mètres surplombant le ruisseau des verreries, des belvédères donnant vue sur le lac de Mervent, des arbres remarquables. 
• Parc de Pierre Brune : espace récréatif pour petits et grands, aménagé sur 6 hectares en plein cœur de la forêt. Trampoline, manège, tyrolienne, toboggan géant, élastique jump, bateaux tamponneurs…(Accueil Vélo)
• Vouvant : Unique cité médiévale en Vendée, Vouvant est classée « Petite Cité de Caractères » et « Plus Beaux Villages de France ». Cheminez le long des remparts en passant par la porte de la poterne, admirez l’église romane au patrimoine majestueux, laissez-vous charmez par les ruelles pittoresques du bourg fortifié et le seul vestige du château Médiéval, la mystérieuse Tour Mélusine… un jeu de piste avec réalité virtuelle vous permet d'agrémenter votre visite de la Tour Mélusine.

• Fontenay-le-Comte: the town is a member of the association Les Plus Beaux Détours de France (featuring charming, tranquil, historic small towns), as well as being classified as a Ville d'Art et d'Histoire for its cultural riches. Stroll along its lanes, the oldest going back to medieval and Renaissance times. Discover fine bourgeois homes, further architectural treasures and the banks of the Vendée River. To explore Fontenay-le-Comte in an original, poetic manner, head to the tourist office, from where you can join "l'étrange balade de Fontenay" (“a strange tour of Fontenay”).
  • Château de Terre-Neuve: one of the loveliest châteaux in the Vendée, containing a fine collection of art works and period furniture, its splendid 16th-century architecture renowned for having welcomed illustrious figures, from 16th-century eminent local figure Nicolas Rapin, via 19th-century painter Octave de Rochebrune, to 20th-century Belgian crime fiction master, Georges Simenon…
  • Parc Baron: these public gardens with their fine trees stand on the vestiges of a medieval castle, with a few towers and portions of ramparts still visible. In the upper part of the gardens, Parcabout consists of an ensemble of giant nets fixed to the trees, which young and old alike can have fun walking across, up on high.  
  • La Fontaine des Quatre Tias: the emblem of the town, topped by a triangular pediment and a basket-handle arch, the water flowing out from four pipes, the features after which this fountain is named.
  • Église Notre Dame de Fontenay-le-Comte: the main religious edifice in town, the Gothic architecture containing some notable furnishings, including a remarkable instrument, the Marie Reine du Ciel organ.
• Massif Forestier de Mervent Vouvant: the largest state forest in the Vendée, packed with little gems, including the Grotte du Père de Montfort, a hermit’s cave drawing pilgrims, the Pont du Déluge, an arched bridge built over the Verreries stream and reaching 22m in height, belvédères (viewing points) over Mervent Lake, and remarkable trees. 
• Parc de Pierre Brune: a recreational space covering six hectares in the heart of the forest, featuring trampolines, merry-go-rounds, zip-wires, giant slides, elastic jumps, electric bumper boats and much more, offering fun for young and old alike. (Accueil Vélo accredited site)
• Vouvant: a unique medieval village in the Vendée, Vouvant is classified as a Petite Cité de Caractère, as well as being a member of the association Les Plus Beaux Villages de France. Wander along the ramparts, passing under the Porte de la Poterne gateway, admire the Romanesque church with its fine heritage, appreciate the charming lanes within the fortified village and visit the one remaining vestige of the medieval castle, the mysterious Tour Mélusine. At the last, the virtual reality treasure hunt is a good way of adding fun to your tour of the village.
