La Barre de Monts - Fromentine / Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie Vendée Vélo Tour

The route

This stage doesn’t present any particular difficulties for cyclists, leading you almost exclusively along cycle paths. From La Barre-de-Monts - Fromentine to Saint-Jean-de-Monts, you ride along forest tracks providing shade and protection from coastal winds. Next, you cross the quarters of Les Demoiselles and Les Becs. Cycle along the promenade behind the Plage de Sion beach, then continue along the rocky Corniche Vendéenne. Do take care crossing the centre of town at Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie, with a zone shared with motorized traffic, from the level crossing up to the Place de la Douane car park. In these parts, especially as traffic is dense during summer holidays, we urge you to take great care.

• La Barre de Monts – Fromentine :
  • L’Esplanade de la Mer : habillée d'une vingtaine de villas balnéaires à l'architecture remarquable, elle offre un superbe panorama sur le pont et l'île de Noirmoutier.
  • Le feu de Fromentine : d'une hauteur de 10,05 mètres, l'édifice a la particularité d'être en métal. Il est l'unique phare de ce type en Vendée. Installé à Fromentine en 1915, il fut classé Monument Historique en 2012.
  • Le Pey de la Blet, l'escalier dans le ciel : au sommet d'un immense escalier de bois, niché en pleine forêt, vous surplombez la canopée et bénéficiez d'une vue remarquable à 360° sur l'océan, la pinède et le marais.

• Saint Jean de Monts :
  • L’Estacade : une promenade de 400 mètres au-dessus de l'océan.
  • Les immenses plages de sable fin : de La Barre de Monts - Fromentine à Saint Jean de Monts se succèdent 22 plages dorées, tantôt sauvages et intimistes, tantôt urbaines et animées, toutes en pente douce et sans courant.   
  • La Corniche Vendéenne : site classé, faites une halte au niveau de la table d’orientation afin de contempler le spectacle de la mer.
  • Les cinq pineaux : ces 5 rochers en pleine mer vous surprendront.
  • Le Trou du diable : également appelé Marmite du diable, qui, les jours de forte houle, sous son anse de schiste, lance des geysers d’écume blanche.
  • Le Feu de Grosse Terre : d’une hauteur de 17m et érigé en 1972, il fait partie des derniers grands feux construits.
• Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie :
  • Le quartier de Boisvinet  : érigées dès la fin du XIXe siècle, les villas du quartier de Boisvinet rivalisent de fantaisie et de couleurs.                                                                                                             
  • La Tour Joséphine : c’est à la demande de 16 capitaines du port que le premier  phare de la ville fut construit en 1851 afin de diminuer le nombre de naufrages. Cette tour servit également de dépôt pour les explosifs des Ponts et Chaussées. 
  • Le port de pêche de  Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie : réputé pour la pêche aux poissons bleus, c’est le seul et unique port de l’hexagone à être labellisé « Site Remarquable du Goût ». La pêche à la sardine à Saint Gilles Croix de Vie a été inscrite en 2018 à l’inventaire du Patrimoine Culturel Immatériel de la France.           

• La Barre-de-Monts - Fromentine :
  • Esplanade de la Mer: boasting a couple of dozen seaside villas built in extravagant style, this seafront promenade offers splendid views to Noirmoutier Island and the bridge across to it.
  • Fromentine feu, or little lighthouse: 10.05m in height, this edifice has the distinction of having been built out of metal, making it the only one of its type in Vendée. Installed here in 1915, it was declared a listed historic monument in 2012.
  • Le Pey de la Blet and its escalier dans le ciel, or stairs to the sky: reaching the top of this impressive wooden staircase built in the heart of the forest, you get views over the tree canopy, as well as benefiting from remarkable 360° views over the pine forests, marshes and ocean.
• Notre-Dame-de-Monts: Biotopia covers the world of the coastline and its forests via modern, playful, interactive, sensory museum presentations, allowing you to discover nature in novel way (Accueil Vélo accredited site)
• Saint-Jean-de-Monts:
  • L’Estacade: a 400m-long promenade with views of the Atlantic.
  • Immense sandy beaches: stretching from La Barre-de-Monts - Fromentine to Saint-Jean-de-Monts is a series of 22 golden beaches, some unspoilt or secretive, others urban and lively, all gently sloping and not affected by dangerous currents.   
  • La Corniche Vendéenne: a listed natural coastal stretch, with a good place to stop and enjoy the sea views at the level of the table d’orientation, or viewing point.
  • Les Cinq Pineaux: five surprising rocks that stand out, out to sea! 
  • Le Trou du Diable: a natural site known as “The Devil’s Hole”, also nicknamed the Marmite du Diable, or “Devil’s Cauldron”, that, on days when the waves are whipped up by the winds, shoots geysers of white foam from its schist-rock creek.
  • Le Feu de Grosse Terre: a lighthouse 17m in height, put up in 1972, so one of the most recent lighthouses to have been built in France.
• Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie :
  • Boisvinet Quarter: the fancy villas built in this quarter around the end of the 19th century compete in extravagant touches and colourfulness.                                                                                                             
  • Tour Joséphine: a lighthouse built in 1851 at the request of 16 sea captains here, to try and put an end to all-too-frequent shipwrecks, although the tower also served as an explosives depot for the French state’s Ponts et Chaussées infrastructure department. 
  • Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie fishing port: reputed for blue, or fatty, fish catches, and, at time of writing, the one and only port in mainland France to have received the accreditation as a Site Remarquable du Goût for maintaining its strong culinary traditions. In addition, sardine fishing at Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie has been officially listed, since 2018, as part of France’s Patrimoine Culturel Immatériel, or intangible cultural heritage.           

SNCF train stations

• SNCF coaches serve La Barre-de-Monts / Fromentine - line 13 (Nantes - Noirmoutier). The coaches have six spaces for transporting bikes.
• Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie train station is served by TER regional trains: line 11 (Nantes - Challans – Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie)
