The 4 stages of Saint-Malo to Rhuys - Cycle Route 3 in Brittany

1 St-Malo / Evran (Mottay Lock)
From the salty corsair city of St-Malo, a sea bus takes you across to the resort of Dinard. Then a greenway leads you south past villas, on to Dinan, a mighty medieval hilltop town. Next, follow the towpath beside the Canal d’Ille et Rance, either going to Mottay Lock (Véloroute 3) or as far as Evran (Véloroute 2). This stage takes you mostly along greenways suitable for all cyclists.

2 Evran (Mottay Lock) / St-Méen-le-Grand
This stage leaves the Canal d’Ille et Rance towpath, alternating between quiet roads and bucolic greenways. Two enjoyable tourist possibilities are the new geological Maison des Faluns at Tréfumel and the railbikes at Médréac station. The renovated old stations add character to this stretch, suitable for moderately experienced cyclists.

3 St-Méen-le-Grand / Ploërmel
After visiting the interactive museum « Tous à vélo avec Louison Bobet », dedicated to one of France’s most famous cyclists, head for St-Onen-la-Chapelle. A quiet road leads to Mauron to join the busiest greenway in Brittany. The local red sandstone makes the architecture around here stand out. At Mauron, continue along the greenway. This stage is for moderately experienced cyclists.

4 Ploërmel / Questembert
Leaving from beside the Lac au Duc at Ploërmel, this high greenway offers magnificent views down on verdant valleys. At several points you can spot the Canal de Nantes à Brest, almost playing hide-and-seek with you! The surface is smooth, allowing you to cycle along with ease, taking in the country views. A stage suitable for all cyclists.
