The Dropt Valley by bike
Touching on three French counties (départements), the Lot-et-Garonne, Gironde and Dordogne, the Véloroute de la Vallée du Dropt is a little gem of a cycle route in southwest France. It takes you exploring along 89km, riding at the foot of gentle slopes, through a string of picturesque villages, each with an appealing café terrace or two at which to pause. The route’s colours sparkle with the seasons; the brilliant white spring plum blossom is followed by yellow sunflowers in summer, giving way to the rich hues of the autumn vines. Those into local heritage can discover local châteaux and bastides (medieval grid-plan towns). Culinary delights include wines and prunes. A further theme to follow is some 75 old water mills dotted along the river!
🔗Connecting route
The Dropt Valley is a “connecting route”, linking the Canal des 2 Mers cycle route to the Lot Valley, allowing you to plan your own itinerary.
Signposting along the cycle route
The whole of this cycle route is along minor roads – smaller county roads, or municipal roads, all with little traffic. First, from the historic port of La Réole, on the banks of the Garonne River, up to Loubens, follow the signposting for the Canal des 2 Mers à Vélo cycle route. Then, from Loubens on, specific signage indicating La Vallée du Dropt à Vélo has been put in place as far as Monsempron-Libos.
When to go?
As the winds in these parts are generally westerly, best start from La Réole beside Garonne, then head north to join the Vallée du Dropt to cycle on eastwards. This cycle route is accessible year-round, but in the coldest months, on certain days, the roads may be icy.
Is this cycle route suitable for you?
La Vallée du Dropt à Vélo is classified as suitable for those who cycle often, given that the route is exclusively on roads shared with motorized traffic. Overall, there’s very little variation in altitude along the route, but there is the odd slope that might prove taxing for those not used to cycling, notably to reach some of the bastide towns along the way, and also along the final third of the route. In short, this véloroute might suit best adult cyclists who are already used to embarking on the odd cycling outing.
