Here, emblematic objects, high quality unpublished photographs, period films and animated maps help to understand the extent of the conflict in the Nord Pas-de-Calais during the First World War. More than 300 large-format photographs, official or anonymously taken by soldiers, plunge us into the reality of this appalling war. The journey consists of seven parts: the war of movement, trench warfare, a deadly war of attrition, the north under German occupation, the return of the war of movement, death at the front and "the hell of the north and reconstruction.
This historical content of the site was prepared by an international scientific committee (France, Belgium, Germany and England) led by historian Yves Le Maner.
In the midst of an open landscape, the History Centre of the Memorial' 14-18 Notre-Dame-de-Lorette is distinguished by its sober and impressive architecture made of black cubes, reminiscent of the blockhouses born during the Great War. Its interior, between light openings on the plains of the Pas-de-Calais and dark walls, carries within it the deaf memory of the World War.
