LA COUPOLE
Description
In a few figures, La Coupole is a colossal dome, 71 metres in diameter, 55,000 tonnes of reinforced concrete and 5.5 metres thick!Located 5 km from Saint-Omer, La Coupole is one of the most monumental reminders of the Second World War. This immense bunker, built by the Todt organization in 1943-1944, was intended to store, prepare and launch Hitler?s secret weapon, the V2 rocket, into downtown London.
Behind this weapon lies the story of a young Nazi engineer, Wernher von Braun, who was taken over by the Americans in the aftermath of the war and went on to develop the huge Saturn V rocket that would send mankind to the Moon.
Rehabilitated as a History Center, La Coupole offers two tours devoted to daily life under the Occupation and Hitler?s secret weapons program, built by deportees in the Mittelbau-Dora concentration camp in Germany. The tour uses an augmented reality tablet to make the experience even more immersive, with 3D reconstructions.
La Coupole is also a 3D planetarium, the only one of its kind to be located on a former V2 rocket launch site, and the only one equipped with cutting-edge technology - 10K-3D - making it the most modern in the world! With its 360° hemispherical screen, La Coupole 10K-3D Planetarium offers a breathtaking experience and total immersion in the stars, with exceptional image quality.
