Departmental Museum of Ancient Arles

Avenue de la 1er division Française libre 13104 Arles
Careful scenography, a chronological and thematic layout, models and floor plans make the city's ancient history, from prehistory to late Antiquity, accessible to all.

Since opening its doors in 1995, the museum has expanded to include an auditorium and the Roman-inspired Hortus garden, adjacent to the museum and the remains of the Roman circus.
Excavations in the Rhône have considerably enriched the collections, and an 800 m2 extension has been added to the building to present almost 500 objects relating to trade and navigation, including the 31 m-long barge Arles Rhône 3, which has been brought out of the river and restored, an impressive testimony to trade by river in Roman times. A policy of temporary exhibitions, general or thematic tours of the collections, courses and workshops for all types of public enable visitors to appreciate the richness of the archaeological heritage of which we are the heirs. A visit to the museum means stepping back in time to encounter tangible antiquity, and realizing just how close it is to us.
