Departmental Museum of Wonders in Tende
Opened in 1996 by the Département des Alpes-Maritimes, the Musée des Merveilles is dedicated to one of Europe's largest rock engraving sites, the Vallée des Merveilles and Fontanalba, in the Mount Bego region. From the end of the Neolithic period, some 5,000 years ago, to the last century, man left some 50,000 signs on 4,000 rocks, making this site the largest historical monument in France. The museum's permanent galleries cover a wide range of themes: from the evolution of man and landscape to archaeology and protohistoric engravings, from rock art around the world to the historical discovery of the Mont Bego region, from territorial history to historical engravings and popular arts and traditions...
As a place of conservation, research and exhibition, the Musée des Merveilles is a living cultural center that bases its public activities on an exceptional archaeological and ethnological heritage.
Guided tours, workshops and events are available for schoolchildren and adults alike (rates and bookings on request).
