The Vélosud

In contrast to those cycling high-flyers who ride from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean, ticking off one iconic Pyrenean mountain pass after the next as they go, by taking the Vélosud you can enjoy a more relaxing alternative, following the gentle foothills of the Pyrenees, on a cycle route accessible to a far wider variety of cyclists, from sporty types to tourists. So, how you ride along the famed mountain range, from Biarritz in the west to Le Barcarès in the east, becomes a question of choice and perspective! Whatever the season, you too can catch splendid views of the mountain summits and admire grand vistas along the Pyrenean mountain range. Above all, on this cycle route, you can explore one magnificent valley after the next, as each in turn reveals its startling, separate heritage. In total, the route crosses six départements (French counties): Pyrénées-Atlantiques; Hautes-Pyrénées; Haute-Garonne; Ariège; Aude; and Pyrénées-Orientales. The common thread is the Pyrenean Range, presenting riders with a whole variety of landscapes and cultures, inciting you to discover local gems at each stop. So, embark on a cycling adventure presenting you with fairly moderate slopes and leading you along utterly beautiful stretches of greenway – ingredients to make you love these mountains, as you tackle them at your own pace. We’ve divided the cycle route into 13 stages from which you can pick and choose as you wish. Taking on this great Pyrenean cycling tour will prove elating. Who knows, it may even give you a taste for conquering those iconic Pyrenean passes by bike on another occasion!
