Bâle / Mulhouse

You can really appreciate what a multicultural cycle route EuroVelo 6 is when starting out from Basel. At the station, the various languages you’ll hear show what a cosmopolitan place this is, encouraging openness to different cultures. The city, on Switzerland’s border with France and Germany, reflects the joy of sharing open borders. After a very brief stretch across the German border, the impressive Passerelle des Trois Pays, a footbridge over the Rhine, opens the way to a gentle introduction to the French region of Alsace and then the dynamic town of Mulhouse. After Basel’s multilingual voices, enjoy the variety of birdsong at the Réserve Naturelle de la Petite Camargue. En route, also make a detour to the Kembs hydroelectric dam, showing the power of the mighty Rhine.
The Route
In front of Basel train station, look out for a link indicating the Eurovelo 6. Ride towards the Rhine and the bridge, the Mittlere Rheinbrücke, then follow the river’s east bank downstream (northwards), just crossing the German border briefly to take the footbridge, the Passerelle des Trois Pays.
Once across this footbridge, you’re in France. Follow the signposting for the Canal de Huningue, Kembs and Mulhouse.
Drawing near to the town of Mulhouse, the waymarking may prove slightly tricky to follow. Note that at Riedisheim, at the Grand Chemin de Sausheim, turn right, rather than left as is indicated at time of writing.
Link to the Kembs hydroelectric plant and dam, as a return trip.
To admire the Rhine, before Kembs, at the level of the lock, Écluse N°4, there’s a signposted link leading you to the hydroelectric plant and dam.
