Nature & small heritage

The high forested hills of the Morvan area in central Burgundy remain magnficently unspoilt, but are easy to explore by bike. The Autunoise Greenway (Voie Verte Autunoise) goes from the Côte Chalonnaise’s vine slopes up to Château-Chinon, a town perched in one of the Morvan’s highest spots. A very scenic greenway runs from Santenay to Nolay, then from Epinac to Autun’s gates. After the Autunois Plain comes the wooded Haut-Morvan area, the route here more demanding, alternating between minor roads and La Voie du Tacot, a former railway line. This route proves a joy on a gravel bike, or, for less experienced cyclists, on an electric mountain bike. So, embark on your Morvan adventure!

Signposting and state of the cycle route

The Autunoise Greenway is fully open, in both directions, between Santenay and the D978 crossroads before Arleuf. It is signposted along all this length, with its own dedicated signage.

Take care on the rough surfaces at the level of La Vesvres, along the D681 road before arriving at Autun and on La Voie du Tacot.

Most of the route is along portions of former railway lines, notably La Voie du Tacot, or minor roads, or then farm tracks. Along La Voie du Tacot you actually have to cycle over the former railway track’s ballast that has been covered with a layer of humus, so a bike with wide tyres works best.

Between the official end of the route (just before Arleuf) and Château-Chinon, we at France Vélo Tourisme propose an extra final stretch using the minor C2 and C1 parish roads. This dramatic portion is very winding, with many climbs and descents. In short, it’ll take your breath away!

Welcome to the Itinérance Verte en Autunois-Morvan! Before heading off, make sure you visit Santenay’s vineyards. A short way from the charming wine village of Santenay, a splendid greenway takes you along a former railway track, rising gently up the slopes to Nolay, with its attractive medieval heart and streets. Beyond Nolay, and especially from the viaducts of Rochabec and Cormet, enjoy magnificent views of the surrounding countryside and villages. To reach Epinac, after Châtillon Wood, you’ll need to push hard on your pedals before you rediscover the peace of the greenway at the La Farge Stream.

In the heart of the Morvan Range, Epinac’s former railway station carries the surprising name of Epinac les Mines. That’s because, just behind the station, stands the Hottinguer Mine, constructed in 1863, at that time with the deepest mineshaft in France, descending 623m underground. There are no more miners with coal-blackened faces here today, but discover the place’s industrial heritage at the Musée de la Mine, de la Verrerie et du Chemin de Fer. A bit further on, the Château de Sully, a Renaissance gem, can be reached from the greenway via a magnificent tree-lined alley and makes an uplifting stop. End this stage at the city of Autun on its hillside slope, far removed from the hustle and bustle of the modern world, boasting many Roman vestiges.

Leaving the Autun Plain, at La Celle-en-Morvan, the cycle route leads you into the midst of the Morvan Range. The steep Chaloire Valley marks the start of a new cycling adventure. Riding along the edge of forests, everywhere you look, great piles of neatly cut trunks are lined up. You’ll notice the pleasing woody scent all around. Striking viewpoints open up on the wonderful descents and testing climbs. Along with these delightful scents and sights, you’ll be struck by the deep silence, giving you the joyous impression you’re travelling along the edge of the world, beside an ocean of trees. This stage offers a thoroughly enjoyable journey through Burgundy’s green heart.
