Château de Saint-Mesmin
The fortified castle in action! The fortified castle of Saint Mesmin, in Saint André sur Sèvre, is a 14th-century medieval fortress to which an imposing 28-metre-high keep was added in the 15th century.
Daily medieval events in July and August give visitors the chance to discover this unusual site, with activities for both children and adults. In 2026, the theme is: "Sacrés chantiers! "
In the Middle Ages, the construction of a fortified castle was strategic: ramparts, moat, keep, watchtowers and drawbridge were the basic fortifications. Over time, comfort and hygiene were added, along with wider windows, vast staircases and beautiful decorations. During the wars, these fortresses became vulnerable to the constant advance of artillery. As a result, many castles were besieged, partially destroyed and abandoned. In 2026, it will be quite a task to retrace their eventful histories...
The Château de Saint Mesmin regularly organises Escape Games and Landscape Games throughout the year!
