14,93 km cycling route from Saint-Privat-d'Allier to Le Pont d'Alleyras
The Via Allier cycle route here leads you to explore the very heart of the Allier Gorges. You first ride along above the narrowest, most inaccessible section of the river. This true haven of peace means flora and fauna are undisturbed down there, just to be glimpsed occasionally as you pedal along. Descending to Le Pont-d'Alleyras, you rejoin the banks of the Allier. Views open up over the reservoir created by the Poutès Dam, overlooked by the Château de la Beaume. Take the time to enjoy the refreshing waterside stop, as a quite demanding climb awaits on the next stage.

The Via Allier cycle route from Prades to Saint-Privat-d'Allier
From Saint-Privat-d'Allier to Pont d'Alleyras, you simply follow the D40. This is a narrow, winding little road with few flat stretches. To tackle it, you need to be in good physical shape. The descents require technical cycling skill and can be tricky in parts, requiring mastery of your bike and great care. There are lovely views to enjoy too! Near the end of the stage, the route becomes gentler as you reach the river bank.
Don't miss
- Saint-Privat-d'Allier: a perched village overlooking the Allier Gorges. It lies on the first stage of one of the great French pilgrimage trails to Santiago de Compostela (in northern Spain), the Via Podiensis. Look out for: the Romanesque church; the vestiges of the Château de Rochegude.
- Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage route (or Chemin de Compostelle): the Via Podiensis is an historic pilgrimage route through France, linking the Auvergne’s religious city of Le Puy-en-Velay to Saint-Jean-Pied-de Port near the Pyrenean border with Spain and one of the best known and still most followed pilgrimage routes across France.
