160km cycling route from Montbéliard to Dôle through Besançon
Near the town of Montbéliard, the Canal du Rhône au Rhin joins the Doubs Valley, which then meanders along below dramatic wooded slopes and rocky ridges. This spectacular EuroVelo 6 section up to Franche-Comté’s magnificent capital Besançon is wonderful to explore, the way marked by historic towns and remarkable vestiges of innovative industries that thrived by the river up to the first half of the 20th century. The cycling is very easy, mainly on greenways accessible to all.
Follow the Doubs' bends by bike
Cycling along the winding course of the Doubs is a real breath of fresh air. The Doubs is dotted with historic towns and the remains of the ingenious industry that brought the valley to life during the first half of the 20th century. The Rhône-Rhine Canal runs alongside this river and cuts across some of its bends.
At the top of the Citadel of Besançon
Miles of walls, 'Tenaille' defences, gatehouses, curtain walls, towers and more. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2008 as part of the Vauban fortifications, this wonderfully restored fortress is where everything happens in Besançon. Museum of the Resistance and Deportation, Comté Museum, Espace Vauban, zoological gardens - there's something here for everyone!
Saline Royale d'Arc-et-Senans
The saline royale d'Arc-et-Senans is well worth a visit. This industrial utopia imagined by Claude-Nicolas Ledoux was intended for salt production and was built between 1775 and 1779. With a circular shape, the royal saltworks housed places of habitation and production, 11 buildings in all. From the EuroVelo 6 itinerary, a cycle path will take you to the salt marsh through the forest of Chaux (about 15 km).
