Musée du Petit Palais - Louvre en Avignon
The Musée du Petit Palais is one of Europe's leading museums of medieval art. It has been awarded the Musée de France label and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Formerly the livery of Cardinal Arnaud de Via (died 1335), nephew of Pope John XXII, then the palace of the Archbishop of Avignon, the building was rebuilt in the late 15th century by Archbishop Julien de la Rovère, the future Pope Julius II.
Its crenellated facade features mullioned windows.
The museum houses a unique collection of paintings from the Middle Ages and the Italian Renaissance (over three hundred Italian primitives), including the Campana collection, a major collection from the Musée Calvet (Ecole d'Avignon from the 13th to the 16th c.) and medieval sculptures from the 12th to the 16th c. from Avignon and the surrounding area.
This collection is essential for understanding artistic creation in medieval and Renaissance Italy. It provides a panorama of Italian painting, from the great names (Botticelli, Carpaccio) to the many masters and workshops (deposited by the Musée du Louvre), as well as a collection of medieval Provençal sculptures and paintings and Italian paintings (deposited by the Fondation Calvet).
Reading corner:
Set up in a room of the museum, the reading corner allows young and old alike to discover books related to the temporary exhibitions and the Italian collections of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Take your time, relax and enjoy: books are coming to the museum!

Available free of charge from the museum reception desk, the "smart bag" invites you to discover the collections in a different way. The program includes activities such as "Hunt and Seek", "The Art of Words", "Budding Artist" and "Puzzle Madness", as well as cards entitled "Histoire d'oeuvre", which share anecdotes about the paintings.
