Grande boucle de 205 km depuis Bordeaux

Une grande boucle au départ de Bordeaux qui s'étire vers l'est, réalisable en un week-end pour les sportifs ou en davantage pour un voyage plus doux !

On emprunte la piste cyclable Roger Lapébie pour rejoindre la Garonne et la suivre jusque Langon, point d'étape du parcours. Là, forêts de pins et vignobles prennent le relai sur une voie verte de 70 km, avant d'approcher Bordeaux pour boucler la boucle.

Piste cyclable Roger Labépie

Débutant  peu après la sortie de Bordeaux, à Latresne, la piste cyclable Roger Labépie déroule son velours asphalté sur une voie ferrée réaménagée, ponctuée d'anciennes gares et maisonnettes de passage à niveau. Détour conseillé à La Sauve pour admirer l’ancienne abbaye de la Sauve-Majeure, site UNESCO.

Plus à l'est, une fois les anciennes portes de Sauveterre-de-Guyenne franchies, vous découvrirez la place centrale entourée d’arcades, au cœur de l’ancienne bastide de 1281.

Les vignobles du Bordeaux à vélo

Bordeaux n'est pas la capitale de vin par hasard : la ville est entourée de célèbres régions viticoles, véritable paradis des amateurs de vin !

Vous traverserez le vignobles des Graves, avec notamment l'appellation "Pessac-Léognan" regroupant tous les grands crus des graves. Le territoire abrite aussi la commune de La Brède, lieu de naissance de Montesquieu où se tient encore son château !

Explorer Bordeaux et son centre historique

Au départ ou à l'arrivée de cette boucle s'offre bien sûr l'occasion de visiter Bordeaux à vélo, ou à pied, avec son patrimoine historique riche, entre l'étonnante "Grosse Cloche" d'un ancien beffroi datant du XIIIème siècle, la majestueuse Place de la Bourse, le Grand Théâtre - l'un des plus anciens d'Europe -, ou encore la Cathédrale Saint-André.

Pour déambuler, les quais de la Garonne pourront aussi être un fil conducteur idéal, vous guidant du miroir d'eau jusqu'à la Cité du Vin ou au Bassin des Lumières pour de belles expériences immersives !

Leaving Bordeaux, after crossing the St-Jean Bridge, a cycle track that runs in part alongside the Garonne leads to Latresne, where you join the beautiful Roger Lapébie cycle track. It’s named after the winner of the Tour de France in 1937 and is remarkably well laid out along a former railway line, with several dedicated stops in former railway stations. The way heads to Créon. This place, set around its arcaded central square, a remnant of a former bastide fortified town, is well worth a detour.

The route continues along the former railway line, recalled by converted stations and railway-crossing houses. A detour to La Sauve is well worth it to admire the historic Abbey of La Sauve-Majeure. Enter Sauveterre-de-Guyenne via one of its splendid old gateways to make for the arcaded central square, at the heart of the bastide fortified town created in 1281.

In the heart of the Entre-Deux-Mers area – between the two rivers, the Garonne and Dordogne, nicknamed ‘seas’ – you cross an ocean of vines! The terrain is hillier here. You join the Canal de Garonne at La Réole. This town conceals a few treasures behind its ramparts. In its maze of little streets, don’t miss the 13th-century church of St-Pierre, nor the esplanade next to a former Benedictine Abbey which offers a fine view over the Garonne Valley.

From La Réole, the route continues on to the Canal de Garonne, along a pleasant towpath in the shade of plane trees. Between Castets-et-Castillon and Bazas, we continue along a long-distance cycling route. The mediaeval town of Bazas and its cathedral of Saint-Jean-Baptiste, listed as UNESCO world heritage sites as part of the Santiago de Compostela routes, are particularly noteworthy. The delicious Bazas beef is a local speciality meat lovers must absolutely try.

Setting off from Bazas, the road follows a cycle path along the former railway line which once connected the Arcachon Basin to the Garonne. Two must see sites along the way: the collegiate church of Notre-Dame d'Uzeste, which houses the tomb of Pope Clement V. And the castle of Villandraut, built by the latter in the 14th century. This is also a great opportunity to sample the delights of the Bordeaux Wine Route in Graves and Sauternes.

After enjoying all the outdoor possibilities at Hostens, the Scandibérique continues south, via a long stretch of greenway, to the town of Bazas and, thanks to a recent extension, as far as Langon. This good-quality greenway in fact makes it possible to go from the Bassin d'Arcachon by the coast to the Canal de Garonne (via Langon and Castets-en-Dorthe). You cycle along a really lovely path through quiet pine forests. Note how different plots are planted with pines of different ages. While the colour green dominates, when heather and broom flower, Impressionist touches of yellow, white, pink, red and purple are added to the picture. If heading out quietly early in the morning, you may encounter deer on your path.

Bordeaux makes for such a fine city break, parting may be hard, but continuing along the Scandibérique, the cycle route via the Bègles tramline and through the little valleys of the Eau Bourde and the Eau Blanche makes it easy to ride south out of town. The splendid Cayac Priory at Gradignan, once a refuge for pilgrims, is worth a proper visit. Then head for Hostens via the famed vineyards of the Pessac-Léognan area. As you reach La Brède, it would be only fitting to uncork a bottle of finest Graves white in homage to Montesquieu, a major 18th-century political philosopher from here, and to visit his family château. After Graves’s vineyards come a mix of hardwood and pine woods. The greenway from La Brède leads peacefully down to Hostens.
