Discover the joys of the Vallée du Loir by bike. This Loir Valley (nb, ‘Loir’ without an ‘e’), designated a Pays d’Art et d’Histoire for its cultural riches, crosses the southern part of the county of Sarthe. From Ruillé-sur-Loir to Château-du-Loir via Marçon and La Chartre-sur-le-Loir, the way meanders through the Jasnières and Coteaux du Loir vines. You then pass lakes and pastures up to Le Lude, with its fine château and gardens. A greenway leads on to La Flèche, an historic riverside town with a major zoo.

    La Sarthe à Vélo : Le Mans / Le Grand-Lucé [30 km]

    Leaving central Le Mans, the V44 cycle route takes you to the banks of the Huisne and lovely greenways leading to the grand Plantagenet Epau Abbey and through L’Arche de la Nature, a protected nature zone on the edge of Le Mans, reflecting the different types of countryside to be found around the Sarthe. The route continues on quiet roads, going past meadows, hedgerows and forests, to Parigné-l’Evêque and Le Grand-Lucé.

    From Le Grand-Lucé, the route heads for beautiful old Bercé Forest and the village of Jupilles, where the Carnuta Museum focusing on local life and the forest will surprise your senses. You then follow the course of the Dinan Stream, lined with lakes, via quiet roads. After Flée, the route joins the Loir Valley at the town of Château-du-Loir.

    The Vallée du Loir à Vélo (Loir Valley by Bike – nb, this is the Loir without an ‘e’) starts its part in the county of Sarthe at Ruillé-sur-Loir, then goes to Château-du-Loir via La Chartre-sur-le-Loir and the wine-producing Coteaux du Loir slopes. Wine-lovers can enjoy discovering the rare Jasnières wines and Marçon vineyards. If you enjoy swimming, try Les Varennes Lake and its outdoor sports centre.

    The Vallée du Loir à Vélo cycle route takes to the high ground above the town of Château-du-Loir before going back down to the River Loir. Enjoy the meadows, hedgerows and lakes as you pass through the valley. At Vaas, riding beside the Loir, go and see Rotrou Mill. Then continue on towards Le Lude.

    The splendid Château du Lude and its formal French gardens make for a great visit. Then rejoin the Vallée du Loir à Vélo via a greenway. This lovely, gentle track takes you along a former railway line, up to the riverside town of La Flèche, where you can rejoin the V44 La Sarthe à Vélo route.

    From La Flèche, this last stage of the Vallée du Loir à Vélo takes you along quiet, easy little country roads to Cré-sur-Loir. Pretty marshlands line the Loir in these parts, with reedbeds, riverside woods and watery meadows making up an unspoilt natural zone in the midst of the Pays Fléchois area.
