    This enticing section of the Canal des 2 Mers à Vélo cycle route transports you from the seaside atmosphere of the postwar resort of Royan to the splendid Ancien Régime quays of Bordeaux. The route running beside the Gironde Estuary is not completely laid out at time of writing, so you have to deal with a few stretches of small, rough, steep tracks for the moment. Or opt for the easier provisional link leading south of the Gironde Estuary via Lacanau, on to Bordeaux.

    Bordeaux, a splendid city listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, makes for one glorious starting point on the Canal des 2 Mers à Vélo cycle route. Once you’ve crossed the mighty Garonne River, you enter the Entre-Deux-Mers vineyards via a great cycle track. At Sauveterre-de-Guyenne, join a quiet road to reach the Canal de Garonne near the town of La Réole. Then a greenway runs alongside the canal, shaded by planes, up to Agen.

Head a bit away from the Canal de Garonne to enjoy charming, hilly terrain with hints of Tuscany. Moissac and Montauban, pink-brick towns on the Tarn River, have each been designated a Ville d’Art et d’Histoire for their rich culture. Their culinary attractions are strong too. As to much larger pink-brick Toulouse, it’s a dynamic regional capital. Take in its striking monuments and vibrant quarters.

    From Toulouse to Carcassonne, this section of the Canal des 2 Mers à Vélo cycle route plunges you into the splendid history of the Canal du Midi, designed in the 17th century to link Garonne to Mediterranean. The way is enchanting, following this very pretty canal with its very southern French feel. Be especially careful along the section south of Port Lauragais (and Avignonet-Lauragais), as it is not laid out or signposted at time of writing and requires appropriate bikes.

    Passing at the foot of the magnificent medieval fortified city of Carcassonne, this section of the Canal du Midi à Vélo then takes you along a route dotted with remarkable canal constructions to admire, especially when watching boats using them. A splendid additional route leads along the Canal de la Robine to the former Roman capital of Narbonne. This route ends with a surprising way through big coastal lakes to Port-la-Nouvelle, where it reaches the Mediterranean.

Admire the succession of ingenious, majestic engineering works of art along this stretch, like the locks at Fonserannes, the Orb canal-bridge, or the circular lock at Agde. Although the route along the canal’s towpath on this section is not complete at time of writing, the exceptional charm and natural setting make up for any inconvenience.
