Mediterranean Cycle Route

The aim of the Méditerranée à Vélo cycle route is to link Spain to Italy and the Pyrenees to the Alps, via southern France. This is the French link in the greater EuroVelo 8 route. Cyclists first tackle a section of the Catalan Pyrenean route, Pirinexus, to join the southern end of the the Mediterranean Cycle Route. This route then offers a wonderful new way of appreciating the French arc of the Med at your own rhythm, from Le Perthus to Menton. Enjoy the mix of sea, mountains, lakes, marshes and canals, plus sublime heritage, much dating back to the Roman Empire, a shared heritage around the Mediterranean. Along the way, you can also follow the most southerly section of the Canal du Midi as well as one of the final sections of ViaRhôna. All told, this route presents a unique way to make the most of southern France… by bike.
Signposting of the itinerary
La Méditerranée à vélo is still being developed on certain sections. Where the route is complete, it is signposted with the “La Méditerranée à vélo” logo along with its EuroVelo 8 identifier. The route is signposted in both directions.

When to go ?
La Méditerranée à vélo can be ridden year-round. However, summer is not recommended due to high temperatures and heavy tourist traffic along the coast.
Direction of travel
The route is signposted in both directions, so you can ride either west or east. Keep in mind that the eastern section (from Apt to Menton) is hillier.
Is this route right for you ?
We classify La Méditerranée à vélo (EuroVelo 8) as “Intermediate”, as around 60% of the route follows small, shared roads. It is best suited to riders with some experience, with the physical difficulty increasing as you head east and encounter more elevation.
From Le Perthus (on the Spanish border) to Apt, the route alternates between dedicated cycle paths and shared roads. While the official starting point is Le Perthus, access is easier via the train station in Argelès-sur-Mer. From Apt to Menton, the route becomes more hilly and is better suited to experienced cyclists or those using electric bikes.
There are still two gaps to be aware of:
- Between Leucate and Port-la-Nouvelle
- Between Manosque and Meyrargues
- In both cases, you can take a regional train (TER) with your bike, or (if you’re more adventurous) use unofficial alternative routes.
The most accessible sections for families include the following (note that coastal stretches can be very busy in summer) :
- Argelès-sur-Mer-Plage < > Leucate-Plage*
- Port-la-Nouvelle < > Béziers
- Palavas-les-Flots < > Le Grau du Roi*
- Cavaillon < > Apt (via la voie verte du Calavon)
- Cannes < > Nice*
