Tour à vélo de la Loire à l’Atlantique, entre estuaires et marais

Depuis Nantes, laissez-vous accompagner par le ruban vert de l'Erdre puis du canal de Nantes à Brest, le long duquel les écluses rythment votre progression et les haltes bucoliques invitent à la pause. Vous accompagnez ensuite le cours paisible de la Vilaine jusqu’à son embouchure avant de longer le littoral, entre villages de caractère, marais salants, plages et panoramas iodés. Entre estuaire, océan et marais, ce tour à vélo de 368 km est une immersion douce et rythmée dans l’Ouest atlantique, parfaite pour les cyclistes en quête de liberté, de nature et de paysages changeants au gré des marées.

De Nantes à Redon, au fil du canal de Nantes à Brest

Vous quittez l’effervescence de Nantes pour quelques jours d’évasion, en commençant par la paisible vallée de l’Erdre. Entre petites routes tranquilles et voies cyclables sécurisées, le parcours emprunte La Vélodyssée et se déroule en toute sérénité jusqu’à Sucé-sur-Erdre puis Nort-sur-Erdre, deux ports fluviaux accueillants où il fait bon s’arrêter. 

En suivant le canal de Nantes à Brest, les écluses rythment agréablement votre progression à vélo, tandis que les guinguettes de La Cueilleuse et des Janettes offrent de belles pauses bucoliques au bord de l’eau. Une escapade vers la forêt du Gâvre permet de respirer à pleins poumons avant de rejoindre Guenrouët. Plus loin, le bocage s’efface peu à peu pour laisser place aux marais : un décor apaisant, animé par le chant des oiseaux. Depuis le belvédère du Bellion, la vue panoramique annonce votre transition vers la douce vallée de la Vilaine...

La Vilaine en majesté

Vous escortez la Vilaine jusqu’à son embouchure, au gré de ses méandres entre marais et panoramas. Première halte incontournable : La Roche-Bernard, charmante Petite Cité de Caractère® dont le vieux port invite à la flânerie. Plus loin, le barrage d’Arzal impressionne : à la fois par sa taille, c'est le plus grand barrage estuarien d'Europe, et aussi parce qu'il abrite l'un des plus grands ports de plaisance de l’Ouest. 

L’itinéraire vélo se poursuit ensuite sur de petites routes et chemins carrossables qui longent la rivière jusqu’au port de Tréhiguier à Pénestin, havre de calme où le temps semble suspendu. Là, les reflets changeants de l’eau appellent à une dernière pause contemplative sur la Vilaine. Enfin, la Pointe de Pénestin marque la rencontre de la Vilaine et de l’océan — un final grandiose entre falaises dorées et embruns marins.

De Pénestin au Croisic, entre baie, océan et marais salants

Depuis Pénestin, laissez-vous emporter par le souffle de l’Atlantique ! Entre la baie de Pont-Mahé et la Pointe du Bile, l’itinéraire s’élance dans une ambiance iodée et sauvage, avec ses plages, criques et étiers. Sillonnez les ruelles étroites de Piriac-sur-Mer, où des fenêtres discrètes s’ouvrent sur l’océan, avant de rejoindre La Turballe et d’observer notamment le retour des bateaux de pêche à l'anchois. 

Le parcours longe ensuite les marais salants : Guérande et ses remparts se dressent au-dessus de cette mosaïque salée, gardienne d’un patrimoine vivant et authentique. À La Baule, impossible de résister à la célèbre baie : pause baignade ou café face à la mer s’imposent. Si le temps et le cœur vous en dit, offrez-vous vous une escale en direction du Croisic, en aller-retour. Les Petites Cités de Caractère® de Batz-sur-Mer et du Croisic vous attendent. Après avoir profité du Croisic, d’une balade à la criée du port et d’une visite de l’Océarium, revenez à vélo ou en train vers La Baule pour conclure cette échappée au bout du monde.

Retour à Nantes avec la Loire en fil conducteur

Depuis La Baule, le regard se tourne vers les paquebots et les grues du port de Saint-Nazaire. Il faudra descendre de votre selle pour embarquer dans l’histoire des grands paquebots à Escal’Atlantic. Le parcours vélo emprunte La Vélidéale et s'élance vers les paysages fluviaux et les marais du dernier fleuve sauvage d’Europe. À Cordemais, la surprenante Villa Cheminée de Tatzu Nishi émerge au-dessus des roseaux, offrant une halte insolite et poétique. 

En franchissant le bac de Loire à Couëron, changez de rive et remontez doucement vers Nantes. Le parcours s’anime alors entre villages charmants et œuvres contemporaines jalonnant les rives de l’estuaire. Enfin, Trentemoult accueille les cyclistes avec ses façades colorées et son ambiance de village de pêcheurs, parfaite conclusion de cette aventure à vélo au fil de la Loire, mêlant patrimoine, nature et créativité !

Between Nantes et Cordemais, the Loire River serves as your guide as you cycle along. Beside the river, the village of Trentemoult, with its atmospheric, colourful houses, opens the way to a stretch of the great river dotted with fantastical, outsized works of art made for a series of exhibitions known as Estuaire. Along this portion, the Vélidéale cycle route shares the way with two other major cycle routes, the Loire à Vélo and the Vélodyssée… up until the river port of Le Pellerin, where an old-fashioned ferry takes you over to Couëron, on the north bank of the Loire. Once across, our cycle route leads you through peaceful Loire marshlands up to the port of Cordemais, with not just its EDF power station standing out, but also the Villa Cheminée, a playful work by Japanese artist Tatzu Nishi, its very startling form a great curiosity rising out of these otherwise very flat lands.

Riding between Cordemais and Saint-Nazaire, France’s longest river pretty much guides you to the Atlantic, the cycle route crossing marshlands and industrial zones. This may be your last stage on the Vélidéale…or it may be your first, if you’re tackling our cycle route in the opposite direction. Saint-Nazaire, a surprising garden city on the edge of the Atlantic, is a welcoming place. Along its coastline, there are no fewer than 20 beaches and creeks accessible to cyclists. The port itself is now France’s largest on the Atlantic. Around town, there are unusual museums to visit, plus remarkable architecture to take in, from Belle Époque to postwar reconstruction. Riding on northwestwards, you can immerse yourself in the atmosphere of France’s second-largest marshlands, the Brière. Here, birdwatchers will be in their element, as the likes of heron, tits and bluethroats find it perfect nesting territory. The Atlantic lies at the end of the Loire and the Brière, providing a fitting finale for completing this major cycle route.

This stage offers a touch of old-fashioned charm. It also passes by Dissignac’s Neolithic mound before Le Bois Joalland Lake, appreciated by locals for its sports facilities. Before the lake, the way passes through woods and countryside; after it, it becomes more urban. Arriving at the port of St-Nazaire, wide boulevards follow the seafront, and the American First World War monument greets you with open arms.

At the level of the greenway to Beslon, it’s possible to head off west to the end of the Le Croisic Peninsula. This route passes through historic Batz-sur-Mer, designated a Petite Cité de Caractère, and then offers you a panoramic tour of the sensational peninsula. The superb Grande Côte cycle track leads you back via an unforgettable route passing through the port of Le Pouliguen before returning to La Baule.

After enjoying the historic town of Guérande behind its ramparts, follow directions towards La Baule to join the greenway to reach that resort, which lies on one of Europe’s loveliest sandy bays. On the way, stop in Escoublac Forest, a great place to have a picnic and relax. Then it’s not too far before you reach La Baule’s beach, where you might well be tempted to go swimming in the sea.

Between St-Molf and Quimiac, this stage goes via a series of little canals serving extensive salt marshes, sometimes giving you the impression that you’re riding on water! Not to be missed: the Pointe de Mesquer Headland and two detours, one to the Petite Cité de Caractère of Piriac-sur-Mer, the other to the port of La Turballe. Then you arrive at the splendid fortified medieval town of Guérande.

This stage, heading south from the Vilaine Estuary, is classed as being for expert cyclists, with a lot of stretches going along the water’s edge. The Pointe du Bile Headland is a great spot at which to stop and appreciate the maritime atmosphere. As to the Bay of Pont-Mahé, with its gently sloping beach, you’ll see how it’s a favourite for learner windsurfers.

La Littorale cycle route leads you gently down to the Barrage d’Arzal; crossing the Vilaine River via this dam is one of the most memorable highlights on this stage. Along the next stretch, you’ll have to adjust your gears frequently to tackle the slopes along the Vilaine Valley, but with fine glimpses to be had of the river as you negotiate a mix of minor roads and more rough-surfaced tracks. The little port of Trehiguier offers an uplifting place to pause, contemplating the Vilaine’s estuary, but looking from its south side to the north side that you departed from in the morning.
In fine weather, the Pénestin Headland offers a splendid, dreamy end to your cycling trip, with views out to sea of the little islands of Houat and Hoëdic, and maybe even Belle-Île-en-Mer…

The route leaves Redon via the Nantes de Brest Canal to the Bellion site and its belvedere, before returning to the waters of the Vilaine and its marshes. Between towpaths and back roads, the stroll to Nivillac is punctuated by numerous unobstructed views of the meandering river. Further on, La Roche-Bernard invites you to rest and contemplate. A few more pedal strokes from the old port of this Petite Cité de Caractère de Bretagne will take you to Férel and the Arzal estuary dam, Europe's largest and Morbihan's 3rd-largest marina with 1,550 berths afloat. You're free to continue on the Vélocéan to Saint-Nazaire or take the V45 cycle route along the Breton coastline.

Staying close to the Brière and the confluence of the Isac and the Vilaine, this stage of La Vélodyssée follows the river at water level. Keep your ears and eyes open for the host of different animal species which populate the surrounding marshes.A magnificent section which alternately twists and turns, with hedgerows, hillsides and copses to each side - sometimes even little pine forests - before reaching Barel Lock. Following cycle paths right to the heart of Blain.

Quiheix’s second lock marks the end of the Nantes to Brest canal towpath. Gradually you return to the hustle and bustle of urban life during this stage of La Vélodyssée, alternating rural routes with sections of the greenway and the charming Sucé-sur-Erdre crossing - a very comfortable stopping point.
