A European cycle route, EuroVelo 5 celebrates the huge journey from London to Italy made by Archbishop Sigeric of Canterbury and other pilgrims in the 10th century. In France, the EV5 crosses northern France, then, after a brief foray into Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany, goes through the département (county) of Moselle, followed by the region of Alsace. Leaving Germany, the bucolic route runs beside the Sarre and Marne au Rhin Canals to Strasbourg, a European hub with many attractions. The route continues through the heart of Alsace’s vineyards, sharing the way with the Véloroute du Vignoble. Enjoying the tranquil slope-side way, you cross through the region’s most beautiful, well-flowered villages, offering you the perfect opportunity to discover the 50 terroirs classified A.O.C. Alsace Grand Cru, plus Alsace’s celebrated cuisine.

EuroVelo 5: canals and vineyards from French Moselle to Alsace

The route alternates between converted former railway lines, stretches of historic Roman road and quiet roads through vines. After Alsace’s vineyards, head on to Mulhouse, a town that’s a veritable showcase for Alsatian industry. After that, it’s up to you whether to continue on to Basel, then Rome, or to branch off onto EuroVelo 6, direction the Atlantic! Or then follow the Rhine up to Strasbourg along EuroVelo 15.
