Une boucle cyclable de 500 km en Bretagne

Voici une idée de boucle cyclable qui honore la diversité des paysages de la Bretagne entre canaux et littoral sauvage ! Au départ de Rennes, suivez paisiblement le canal d'Ille et Rance sur ses chemins de halage. À l'embouchure de la Rance, vous atteignez Dinard, avec la possibilité de faire un petit détour vers la cité corsaire de St-Malo en bus de mer. Place ensuite à la partie littorale de cette boucle avec la Vélomaritime - EuroVelo 4. L'itinéraire longe la côte bretonne avec de splendides panoramas entre le cap d'Erquy et le cap Fréhel, puis s'immisce au cœur de la Baie de Saint-Brieuc. Juste avant Saint-Brieuc, le parcours braque au Sud à travers la Bretagne intérieure le long de la rigole d'Hilvern et ses nombreux méandres par la Voie 8 Bretagne. Une fois à Pontivy, le célèbre Canal de Nantes à Brest et ses nombreuses écluses sera votre fil conducteur jusqu'à Redon. S'ensuit une balade le long de la Vallée de la Vilaine avant un retour et une pause bien méritée à Rennes.

Au fil du Canal d'Ille et Rance

On quitte la capitale Bretonne pour suivre un nouveau guide : le canal d’Ile et Rance et ses méandres, le long de l’ancien chemin de halage du canal, rythmé de haltes et découvertes. À Hédé-Bazouges, l'enchaînement impressionnant des 11 écluses réparties sur 2 kilomètres étonne. S'annonce ensuite la charmante cité médiévale de Dinan, avec ses maisons à pans de bois, niché au pied de la Rance. Enfin, Saint-Malo, son port et ses remparts, protégeant la cité du flot des vagues.

Remonter le cours de La Vilaine

Vous continuez votre traversée de la Bretagne intérieure à vélo le long de ses voies d'eau avec La Vilaine. La rivière canalisée est entrecoupée de petits ports, moulins, écluses et villages de caractères. Vous "remontez" la Vilaine à vélo grâce à son chemin de halage en croisant sur votre route péniches et bateaux de tourisme.

Arrival in Rennes, Brittany’s capital, is easy – the cycle track along the canal towpath takes you right into the centre to discover Rennes’s rich heritage and culture (hence its designation as a Métropole d’Art et d’Histoire). This stage is suitable for all cyclists.

From the salty corsair city of St-Malo, a sea bus takes you across to the resort of Dinard. Then a greenway leads you south past villas, on to Dinan, a mighty medieval hilltop town. Next, follow the towpath beside the Canal d’Ille-et-Rance as far as Evran, with its charming port at the junction of various waterways. This stage takes you mostly along greenways suitable for all cyclists.

Should you have time on your hands, head up first to the seaside resort of Saint-Cast-le-Guildo to make the most of its beaches. The Vélomaritime route then takes you on smoothly via minor roads to Pleslin-Trivagoua, which you reach riding along a stretch of the Dinan-Dinard greenway. On the way, stop at the Château du Guildo, enjoying exceptional views of the Arguenon Estuary.

The breathtaking views along the way are a reward for the quite significant slopes you have to tackle on this Vélomaritime stage!

From Saint-Brieuc, you join the bay named after the city to then enjoy a lovely trip through its nature reserve. Cycling beside the strand, the Bay of Saint-Brieuc reveals a multitude of varied atmospheres, depending on time and tide. On the way to Erquy, enjoy the delights of the resort of Pléneuf-Val-André and the little port of Dahouët tucked away beside it. This stage proves quite challengingly hilly, with all its ups and downs. We're sure local man Bernard Hinault, a true cycling champion and icon, five times winner of the Tour de France, would concur!

Starting at Yffiniac, at the bottom of the Bay of Saint-Brieuc, strike south into the green countryside of inland Brittany. The route, along small roads, leads to the village of Allineuc and Bosméléac Reservoir, which used to provide the water for the Rigole d’Hilvern Channel, built to supply water to the Canal de Nantes à Brest.

The Rigole d’Hilvern Channel was originally built to supply the Canal de Nantes à Brest with water. Today the path beside it has been turned into a lovely greenway. From Bosméléac Reservoir, a peaceful track lined by tall beech trees and chestnut trees meanders through the countryside, past Saint-Thélo and Le Quillio, historic villages that reflect the rich industrial past of the area, where fine linen cloth was manufactured.

4 Saint-Caradec / Pontivy

At Saint-Caradec, at the crossroads of Voie 6, the green Hilvern channel imposes its curves through the Breton countryside passing through Hémonstoir and Saint-Gonnery. The forest of Branguily and the Hilvern lock will mark the end of this picturesque and winding cycle route. All that remains for you to do is let yourself be guided by the canal from Nantes to Brest, punctuated by the numerous locks that can be found as far as Pontivy.

A section of La Vélodyssée with a dedicated cycle path and one rich in waterway heritage: 54 locks and the Rigole d’Hilvern, which epitomises the huge hydraulic complexity of the work required when constructing the canal. Of particular interest are the numerous tree species which, between them, provide very welcome shade from the sun. At the heart of the Rohan Country, this is a very pleasant stage on La Vélodyssée with designated lanes. Shortly after Rohan, don’t miss out on the essential detour past Timadeuc Abbey. The impressive fortress, moored to its rocky platform, comes into view as we head towards Josselin.

There is a medieval feel to this stage of La Vélodyssée, both in Malestroit and in Josselin with their timber-framed houses and narrow streets. Called “the Pearl of the Oust”, Malestroit readily opens up its treasures to curious pedestrians.
A pretty stage on a designated track of La Vélodyssée through a sinuous valley of the Oust with the foothills of the Landes and Lanvaux as a backdrop. After passing the confluence with the Claie, St Congard and the Guélin Lock provide very welcome breaks.

At Guipry-Messac, historically a significant port for transporting salt (once a precious commodity) inland, admire the imposing central mill on its island before continuing along the former towpath by the Vilaine. One highlight is Les Corbinières, a remarkable natural site with steep wooded sides. There are several river ports at which to enjoy a break along the Vilaine. The stage ends at Redon, an historic town at the confluence of the Vilaine and the Canal de Nantes à Brest.

4 Rennes / Guipry-Messac

After enjoying a tour of Rennes, the lively Breton capital, head out of town to follow the route along the Vilaine River. The way out of Rennes is gentle, taking you close to Apigné’s recreational lakes. Then, passing through Pont-Réan and Le Boël you can fully appreciate the charms of the Vilaine Valley, with its former mills, its locks and its attractive villages. The route is still being completed at time of writing, but is easy to follow.
