The Chaîne d’Or has faithfully kept the name of its 18th century ancestor, which used to house the toll offices for the crossing rights. A huge chain would be thrown between the bank and the neighbouring island to mark out a tax that brought enough gold to the Treasury for the Chaîne d’Or (literally Golden Chain) to deserve its name.
