Abbatiale Saints Pierre et Paul

1 rue du couvent 68490 Ottmarsheim
1 rue du couvent 68490 Ottmarsheim
Count Rudolf of Altenburg founded an abbey on his estate in Ottmarsheim for Benedictine nuns, which was consecrated in 1049 by the Alsatian Pope Leo IX. With its octagonal shape, it is the smaller replica of the Palatine Chapel in Aachen.
Numerous fires have marked the history of the abbey church since 1272. Restoration work also brought to light magnificent frescoes from the 11th and 15th centuries. However, a serious fire in 1991 caused considerable damage. And it was only in 1999 that the building regained its splendour following a vast building site.
On the Romanesque Road of Alsace, come and discover this building classified as a Historic Monument.
Guided tours can be organised all year round in French and German on reservation.
