At the top of the Citadel of Besançon

Miles of walls, 'Tenaille' defences, gatehouses, curtain walls, towers and more. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2008 as part of the Vauban fortifications, this wonderfully restored fortress is where everything happens in Besançon. Museum of the Resistance and Deportation, Comté Museum, Espace Vauban, zoological gardens - there's something here for everyone!

Ruins of Montferrand Castle

Of the castle built by John II de Montferrant in the 13th century, only the outer walls and the keep remain today. From the castle esplanade, you have an unobstructed view of the Doubs valley.

Climbing the Rochers du Saussois

How about climbing over the Yonne? The rocks of Saussois, in Merry-sur-Yonne, vestiges of an old coral bar formed in the Jurassic, offer many climbing possibilities (400 routes rated from 4 to 8 on the scale of difficulties) to observe the ribbon of Yonne from their top some 60 meters higher. More affordable, the rocks of Surgy have routes adapted to neophyte climbers.

Le Bec d'Allier, overlooking the confluence between Loire and Allier

Very close from the official start of the bike route la Loire à Vélo in Cuffy, the bec d'Allier is rightly considered one of the most fabulous confluence sites. From the canal du Guétin bridge, it is easy to get to Marzy via the side canal to the Loire, to embrace from the hillside the division of the waters between the Loire and Allier. On the way, the Passeur trail in Gimouille with its educational terminals will offer the pretext of a family bike ride.
